Mining With AMD’s RX VEGA 64
The RX Vega family of graphics cards from AMD has been on the minds of both gamers and Etherium miners. Both camps were quite fond of the Vega GPUs, and then AMD released the Vega Frontier Edition. It got terrible reviews from both sides of the market as gamers and miners found the card horribly unprepared to handle their gaming and mining.
To be fair to AMD, the Vega FE was never meant for gaming or mining. Instead, it was designed with another very niche market it mind. Those working in various visualization fields such as the medical industry, which need to visually represent data with precision, were the intended market for the Vega FE. AMD had been quite honest with the FE’s documentation and didn’t lead the gamers or miners on in any way. Simply put, the card was the Vega Frontier Edition, and many just assumed that the new GPU would be like its predecessors.
The RX Vega 64 was given a bit of a popularity boost because of this. With gamers and miners wanting to avoid the Vega FE, and all the good cards being way to hard to get, both miners and gamers turned to the Vega 64. Designed with gamers in mind, the card also works sufficiently for use in a mining rig as well.

The RX Vega 64 is a gaming GPU, yet there are some mixed reviews about how well it handles gaming. Some have said that the Vega 64 wasn’t anywhere near the best gaming card on the market, even going so far as to compare it to the MSIGTX 1080 Ti Gaming X GPU, which is cheaper and has essentially the same performance value.
Anyone who follows GPUs can see what is going on there, the Vega RX 64 is in competition with the GTX 1080 Ti. It is also losing out a bit as well. The Vega RX 64 has a lower FPS than the the GTX 1080 Ti, which means that in terms of gaming, the GTX 1080 Ti wins.

So, maybe the card isn’t the best gaming GPU on the market. What does that mean for mining? One thing is for sure, you are better off with the Vega 64 than the the Vega Frontier Edition. The Vega 64 has something going for it as a miner, according to some. Although there is a bit of a lack of information about the Vega 64’s use in a mining rig, you can learn from other miner’s experiences.
The Vega RX 64 gets to a hash rate of about 34MH/s and this is while pulling around 350W from the wall. The Vega FE would almost kill itself trying to get past 30MH/s. However, pulling 350W from the wall just to get 34MH/s isn’t exactly what I would call an amazing mining accomplishment.
The Downfall with this card is that it can get pretty hot, although there is a liquid cooled Vega GPU by AMD that handles the internal temperature quite well. This is not that card, though.
